I need to talk about the borderline holy experience at I had at Cop Out Pierogies in Etna yesterday.
On the Yelp page for Cop Out Pierogies, person after person exclaims that these are the "best pierogies in Pittsburgh." Well, I don't want to stir up any controversy with statements like that, but these were certainly the best pierogies that I, an individual human entitled to my own opinion, have had in Pittsburgh in a long time.
I noticed the storefront when riding a bus through Etna a few weeks ago. Although it was tiny and closed, something about that fleeting glance through a bus window stuck out to me and I knew I would have to return to investigate.
Actually making it through the door of the store required a little bit of planning, as Cop Out is only open on Friday and Saturday, for a few select hours in the afternoon.
The inside of Cop Out is similarly tiny, with a long counter for ordering and two tables to eat in house. The second I looked at the menu I was incredibly overwhelmed, and all but begged the teenage waiter to order for me.
The menu is enormous, and more over, incredibly intriguing. Potato Bacon Blue Cheese? Chicken Parm? Chicken Spring Roll? Pepperoni Pizza? SHRIMP GRITS BACON? WATERMELON TEQUILA HABANERO CHICKEN???? How are you supposed to wrap your head around all of this?
The majority of Cop Out's business is frozen dozen to go, but if you can snag one of the two tables, they will also cook them up for you in house.
I desperately wanted to try almost all of the flavors, but as one girl I couldn't rationalize ordering 34 pierogies to myself. I settled on a half dozen "traditional" and a half dozen "mac & cheese".
The pierogies arrived fast, warm and crispy, with a side of onions. Although I had ordered a half dozen, around 8 of each flavor arrived on my plate, a thoughtful touch that did not go unnoticed.
And then I had a bite, and it was all over. There were tears my friends, and I am not kidding at all. Not sure what that says about me but.... I don't care. The quality of the pierogies is apparent, and Cop Out really knows how to cook them up in house.
Although I didn't finish all of the pierogies there, I took them home and lets just say they mysteriously disappeared before the sun set...
Cop Out Pierogies started in late 2012 by Carl Funtal and family, a police officer in Shaler for over 24 years. Carl started the shop at the urging of friends and family who loved his already famous pierogies.
Carl retired to dedicate his time to his pierogies (hence the name), and the business has been a huge success with a cult reputation in Pittsburgh for having the best pierogies.
I don't know what more I can do to convince you to get over there and try them for yourself. If you, like me, get emotional over food, I would suggest bringing the tissues.
